79 Fun Things To Do in San Francisco

City of San Francisco | ©Athena

San Francisco is the most famous city on the west coast. Its famous bay is full of interesting places to visit: Sausalito, Carmel, Monterey, Pier 39... And of course, its authentic neighborhoods and parks downtown. I will guide you through the best areas to see and how to do it: on foot, by bike, streetcar or boat.

In this guide I not only propose you the most urban plans like gastronomic experiences, shopping and museums, but also visits to the surrounding nature: Giant sequoias, the impressive Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and the relaxing landscapes of vineyards. Pack your bags, you're going to San Francisco!

1. Visit downtown on a hippie bus

In the 1960's in San Francisco a great hippie movement began, having its highest point in 1967 in the so-called Summer of Love. Today the city still maintains the hippie spirit and color in its streets. It can be seen especially in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Don't miss its psychedelic murals, records, vintage clothes and lots of cool stores.

If you want to surround yourself with the best hippie vibe, I recommend you to take this tour aboard a nice and flowery hippie bus that will take you through Haight-Ashbury and other authentic neighborhoods and will also show you the houses of Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

Yosemite National Park is in Sierra Nevada, California. In the United States everything seems to be bigger, right? In this case it is true and it is home to the largest sequoias you have ever seen. A spectacle to behold.

To visit them, I recommend this guided tour that will take you to Yosemite in a small group, so everything will flow very easily. On this tour you will see the famous Bridalveil Waterfall and Tunnel View, a lookout point from which you can see the most spectacular views of the entire Yosemite Valley.

On the coast, you will see the famous houseboats and you can continue your way seeing the sea if you walk along Bridgeway Promenade and Sausalito Boardwalk. Pay attention, you may see seals.

It is worth mentioning that very close to Sausalito is Muir Woods, a natural park with spectacular redwoods and of course, Alcatraz, the famous prison built on an island.

Cannery Row, a complex of old fish-packing factories in which there are now markets and hotels, preserving its traditional style with a very picturesque result.

Another city you should not miss is Carmel. It is a coastal neighborhood that looks like something out of a fairy tale. The city preserves the style in which it was originally built. Don't miss Ocean Avenue, its most picturesque street. Also, Carmel is only a 15-minute drive from Monterey, so visiting both is a great idea.
