Once known as Circus Agonalis, this stadium was built by order of Emperor Domitian around 80 AD, coinciding with the completion of the Colosseum. With a capacity of around 20,000 spectators, the stadium hosted gladiatorial spectacles and exciting athletics competitions.

In its arenas, professional gymnasts, often from Greece, performed impressive acrobatics and physical feats. Races were also held, in which female competitors were particularly prominent. The importance of the competition was such that the names of the winners were inscribed on tombs, surpassing in honour the prizes they received in life, such as the simple wreath of oak and olive leaves.
