So, if you already know almost everything there is to see and do in Madrid, it can be a very good idea to approach this Castilian city.

The two cities are very well connected, so whatever your travel situation you will find the perfect means of transport for you. You can choose between several organized tours that show you the best of the city, or go on your own with a rented car, by bus or train. I give you the keys to make the trip you imagine a reality.

If you want to enjoy Segovia without worrying about organizing the routes, itineraries, means of transport and reservations, the best option is to hire an organized tour from Madrid.

There are several possibilities of excursions to Segovia that are worthwhile, depending on the time you have and the route you are most interested in. For example, you can combine the trip to Segovia with tours of two nearby cities, such as Toledo or Avila, to make the most of your time.

These tours usually include a pick-up service with private transport and a guide who explains the most interesting places you pass through, although they do not usually offer food, but suggest a place or area in the destination city to eat. Some tours propose a meeting point in Madrid to leave directly from the city instead of picking up passengers at various hotels, check the conditions.

The advantage of this option is that they do all the planning, so you can relax and enjoy the day in the city. And they are not bad value for money: the price range (depending on the one you choose, of course) goes from 30 to 50 euros approximately.

Option 1: If you have little time, tour Segovia and the historic center of Madrid in one day

Some tours condense in a one-day tour what you can't miss in both destinations. They usually start with a guided tour of historic Madrid and then travel by bus to Segovia. There you take a walk through the center: the steep streets, the aqueduct, the Cathedral... Everything well explained so that you are not left with doubts.

It is clear that both Segovia and Madrid have much more to offer than what we can see in a few hours, but this proposal is interesting and is very well thought out to squeeze the day in a productive way. If you have few days in this area, it is an interesting option: in a full day, you go to Segovia and return to Madrid. Of course, with a full camera.

Interesting facts

  • Price: These tours of Madrid and Segovia have an average price of about 35 euros per person. They usually include the bus and the guide, but not the food.
  • Duration of the trip: More or less 6 hours, including walks and rides.

A very popular route is the one that stops in the city of Avila on the way to Segovia. Before arriving in the city of the aqueduct, the guide has already shown you the most touristic points of this beautiful old city: the trip usually includes monuments such as the walls of Avila, the Cathedral, the Convent of Santa Teresa and the Basilica of San Vicente.

Once in Segovia, the journey continues: this city has a lot to offer. The route will depend on the tour you choose, but almost all of them include the Cathedral and the Alcázar of Segovia, a walk through the historic center and, of course, the impressive aqueduct.

Interesting facts

  • Price: These tours have an average price of about 50 euros per person. Pay attention to what is included in the option you choose: although they usually include transportation and the work of the guide who accompanies you, they almost never include food.
  • Duration of the trip: The tours are designed to make good use of the time, so they last all day. They usually leave early in the morning from a meeting point in Madrid and return in the evening to the same place.

Option 3: If you do not want to miss the jewel of the Tajo, excursion to Segovia and Toledo from Madrid

Atrip to Toledo, a tourist destination in itself, is always worthwhile. If you prefer to take advantage of your trip to Segovia to get to know it, this is another city with an adequate size so that you can visit it together in one day. In addition, both cities have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so these tours offer you a rounded day.

The tours that combine them usually offer a guided tour of the most important sights and leave time to stroll through the historic center. Many also include entrance to the Alcazar and the Cathedral of Toledo, so prices sometimes vary. It is a good idea to get a first impression of both cities.

If you are someone who likes to drive and go at your own pace, Segovia is a perfect distance from Madrid to spend the day by car. In Madrid you have many options available to rent the car of your choice and the headquarters of the main car rental companies, such as Herz, Europcar or Avis, among others.

Car rental centers are usually close to the busiest stations or urban centers, such as Atocha, but not only: of course, you can also access a vehicle in other parts of the city. The price of a weekend starts more or less from 40 euros, although what you pay varies greatly from the car you choose.

If you just arrived at Madrid airport, there you can rent a car to start your trip (And if you want to get from the airport to Madrid, here I tell you the best way).

If you enjoy driving, I recommend you to make this journey by car. The road through the Sierra de Guadarrama is very beautiful, and also with this option you can stop at intermediate points along the way. Some of them are really worth it, like El Escorial.

Also, if you already have a car, you can do one of the other excursions from Madrid that I recommend.

Interesting facts

  • Price: The price to rent a car depends a lot on the car you choose. I recommend you to check online where is your nearest rental office and the vehicles that are available for the dates of your trip. As a guideline, think that the minimum price for a weekend is from 40 euros approximately.
  • Travel time: The road trip from Madrid to Segovia takes about an hour and a quarter on the A6.

3. Economic and flexible: a bus trip

If you don't feel like driving, you can easily reach Segovia from Madrid by bus. Buses leave from Moncloa station in Madrid and take about an hour and a half to reach Segovia.

The advantage of this option is that it is very economical (it costs approximately 5 euros each way) and can be direct: there are two types of travel for this route. Between the direct service and the service with stop there is only a difference of 5 minutes.

In addition, it is an option that makes things very easy for you because there are plenty of buses available: at least one every hour and at some times of the day, two buses per hour. Segovia's bus station is located at Paseo Ezequiel González number 20, in the southern part of the city. You can walk to the center.

Interesting facts

  • Price: Approximately 5 euros per person per way.
  • Duration of the trip: One hour and a half, more or less.

4 From Madrid to Segovia on rails: do you feel like going by train?

If you like to travel by train, for the journey from Madrid to Segovia you have two possibilities, and be careful because the trip changes a lot depending on which one you choose.

The Ave: fast and comfortable, but does not reach the city center

The high speed train arrives in Segovia from Madrid Chamartin station in less than half an hour. The price of the train varies according to the demand and the time of purchase: you can find tickets for about 12 euros, but it can also be that for the day or time you are interested in they do not go below about 23 euros.

It is a direct and comfortable journey, with several trains available every hour, the only drawback is that the AVE station in Segovia (Segovia- GUIOMAR) is 6 kilometers away from the city.

So to get to the city center, once in Segovia station you have to take another means of transport. You have two options: take a bus line 11or a cab. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes and costs about 2 euros. By cab you get there faster: it takes only 10 minutes and the price of the trip is around 7 euros.

Interesting facts

  • Price: AVE prices vary, so depending on when you travel you can pay between 11 and 23 euros approximately, per person and journey. To this you have to add about 2 euros for the bus line 11 that takes you to the center of Segovia, or the 7 euros or so that costs a cab.
  • Travel time: Half an hour.

The regional train: slower, but to a central station

The regional train takes two hours to get from Madrid to Segovia. There are not many available: about two a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

It is an economical means of transport (it costs about 7 euros round trip with the tourist fare), but if you plan to spend the day it is not the most efficient. However, if you are one of those who enjoy the journey, the train stops at all stations in the mountains of Madrid: Villalba, Cercedilla, Espinar...

The departure is from Chamartin station in Madrid, and arrives at the old train station in Segovia, from which only medium-distance routes are made. The advantage is that the station is in the center of the city, on Obispo Quesada street, with immediate bus connections to get around the city (or even leave to start your trip in Segovia directly on foot).

This route is designed mainly for people traveling from Madrid to the Sierra. To get to Segovia, the journey becomes tiresome with so many stops. I advise you to take one of the other options I have told you about.

Interesting facts

  • Price: With the tourist fare, the round trip costs approximately 7 euros.
  • Duration of the trip: Two hours.
