There are different ways to visit Pompeii, but if I may offer some advice, there is nothing like doing so with an expert guide who can help you contextualize everything you see, understand how its inhabitants lived, what their customs were, etc.

If you are short on time and want to avoid any headaches, you can join an organized tour. But if you prefer, you can also do it on your own. We compare prices for tickets, tours, excursions, and transportation methods below:

If you want to go to Pompeii on your own from Rome, you can do so by train, bus, or your own car (if you have rented one during your trip). By train, if you choose the high-speed train (which takes just over an hour to arrive), the price is around €25 each way.

If you choose the bus, the price is considerably cheaper, as it costs just over €30 for a round trip, and the car is undoubtedly the most expensive option, costing around €60 per day to rent (plus gas, taxes, insurance, etc.). In any case, for more information and to organize your transportation, I recommend reading this article on how to get to Pompeii from Rome.

To get to Pompeii from Naples, you can take a Trenitalia commuter train that costs just over €3 and takes only 40 minutes. Trains run quite frequently throughout the day, so you don't have to worry too much about schedules, and you can buy your ticket at the Piazza Garibaldi station in Naples.

The best stop is Porta Marina, as it is the closest to the entrance to the archaeological site of Pompeii. Although this option is easy, fast, and economical, there's nothing like taking an organized tour to really soak up all the history that the ruins of Pompeii have to tell.
