If you want to go to Pompeii on your own from Rome, you can do it by train, by bus or in your own car (in case you have rented one during the trip). By train, if you choose the high speed train (to take just over an hour to get there), the price is around 25 € each way.

If you choose the bus, the price is quite cheaper, as it costs just over 30 € each way and the car is certainly the most expensive way, and can cost about 60 € per day rental (plus gas and taxes, insurance, etc.). Anyway, to find out more and to organize your transportation, I recommend you to check this article on how to get to Pompeii from Rome.

To get to Pompeii from Naples you can take a Trenitalia commuter train which costs just over 3 € and takes only 40 minutes. There are frequent trains throughout the day, so you don't have to worry too much about schedules and you can buy your ticket at the same station in Piazza Garibaldi in Naples.

The best stop to get off is Porta Marina, as it is the closest to the access to the archaeological site of Pompeii. Although this option is easy, quick and inexpensive, there is nothing like taking an organized tour to soak up all the history the ruins of Pompeii have to tell.
