Step by Step

This whisky tour of Edinburgh’s Old Town is a unique way to combine history, local tradition and tasting in a single experience. The tour begins right in the heart of the Old Town, where you’ll discover how whisky became one of Scotland’s defining characteristics and what role Edinburgh played in that history.

During the walk, your guide will share tales of distillers, smugglers and characters from the city’s darker, more fascinating side, as you make your way through some of the historic centre’s most iconic streets. The experience is designed to engage several senses, with an immersive format that goes beyond a conventional walking tour.

The tour continues at Megget’s Cellar, an underground cellar where a candlelit whisky tasting will take place. There, you’ll learn the essentials to begin understanding this drink, from how it’s made to the influence of elements such as water, barley, peat and the cask on the final product.

To round off the evening, you’ll sample four Scotch whiskies representative of the Speyside, Highland, Islay and Lowland regions, in a guided tasting that will help you recognise aromas, nuances and differences between styles. It’s an ideal experience both for those wanting to discover the world of whisky and for those looking for something a bit different to do in Edinburgh.

I loved the cultural immersion and the whisky tasting, although I would have liked the tour to last a little longer.
