According to historical records, Italica was the birthplace of at least three Roman emperors: Trajan, Hadrian, and, quite possibly, Theodosius. It is considered one of the first Roman settlements in what is now Spain; it is estimated that the city was founded around 200 BC.

During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and during the reign of Trajan, this important Roman enclave achieved high social and military status, thanks to the efforts of its ruler and his successor Hadrian. During this period, the city reached a population that exceeded 8,000 inhabitants.
