Step by Step

Learn more about Lisbon 's history with these tickets to Quake, the earthquake museum. You'll spend an hour and forty minutes touring the streets of the capital after the earthquake that destroyed Lisbon on 1 November 1755. You will be able to experience it at first hand, but safely in a simulator and you will have an audio guide to learn about the devastating tremor.

The earthquake was one of the strongest ever recorded in Europe, with an estimated magnitude of 8.5-9.0 on the Richter scale. It is estimated that between 10,000 and 100,000 people died, making it one of the deadliest in history.

In addition, the quake triggered a tsunami, which caused further damage and loss of life along the coast of Portugal and in other areas of the Atlantic. It is believed to have reached 20 metres in height in some areas.

You will see all this reflected in this space where all your senses will be stimulated in this 4D experience. You will also have an RFID (radio frequency identification) bracelet, small technological devices to wear on your wrist that will accompany you throughout the experience to interact with the exhibits.

Throughout the exhibitions, you will see how the earthquake had a great impact on Portugal, as it led to the development of a new architectural style known as Pombaline architecture.
