Step by Step

This tour starts in Avignon and takes in the Provençal villages where the traces of ancient Rome are most visible. The tour takes approximately 8 hours in a comfortable minivan. Throughout the day, you will be accompanied by an expert guide who will tell you the history and anecdotes of the following places:

  • Nîmes - Provençal city founded by Roman legionaries returning from campaigns in Egypt. The excursion includes a stop at its most emblematic monument, the magnificently preserved Roman amphitheatre. Built at the end of the 1st century, it hosted animal and gladiator fights. You will also visit La Maison Carrée, an imposing Roman temple built at the behest of Emperor Augustus.
  • Pont du Gard - The aqueduct built by the Roman architect Agrippa to supply water to the city of Nîmes. It consists of three rows of arches and was built entirely of limestone. Perfectly preserved, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Uzes - First duchy of France and an important bishopric throughout the Middle Ages. Like other Provençal towns, it is dominated by an impressive castle (Le Duché) and the Cathedral of Saint-Théodorit. The latter is complemented by the Tour Fenestrelle, an Italianate-style tower with a circular base.
  • Orange - A Provençal town less well known than its neighbour Avignon, but no less charming. Its landmark is the Roman Theatre with a capacity of about 9,000 spectators. Known for its extraordinary acoustics, it is the only one to have preserved its original stage.

This guided tour is suitable for all audiences and ideal for getting to know Provence and its most characteristic sites. To fully enjoy the experience, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothes and, in summer, sun cream.

We had a beautiful family day. In addition to a tour of the French culture with these tints of Roman influence, the whole tour provides a very pleasant family atmosphere and above all a formidable landscape. I recommend it, very complete and comfortable.
