Step by Step
On this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum of Crete without having to queue or wait. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is regarded as one of Europe’s most important museums, and here you can discover a collection spanning a period of over 5,000 years.
The museum’s collection is notable for its wealth of treasures from the Minoan era, one of the oldest civilisations of classical Greece, which had its political and administrative centre on the island of Crete.
Among the exhibits are statues, sarcophagi, frescoes, pottery, jewellery and weapons, many of which have been found at the major archaeological sites of Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and Zakros, amongst other locations on the island.
Among the museum’s most notable artefacts are the famous Phaistos Disc, a unique piece of pottery bearing ahieroglyphic inscription that remains undeciphered to this day, as well as a large collection of terracotta figurines from the Minoan period.
The museum is housed in a modern building which opened in 1997 and features spacious exhibition areas for the collections. Furthermore, the museum offers guided tours in several languages and has an auditorium and alibrary specialising in archaeology and ancient art.
If you have the chance to visit Crete, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is an unmissable stop for anyone interested in the island’s history and archaeology.
