Step by Step

This walking tour of Houston takes about 2 hours, just enough time to learn about its history. You'll be accompanied throughout by an expert guide who can give you a local's point of view.

Houston has had a turbulent history. The first settlement in the area, Harrisburg, was destroyed in 1836, but a new city was built on its ruins by two New York developers. Gradually, the new town grew in importance, first for the cotton trade and then for its port and petrochemical industry.

The route includes several iconic buildings, the most famous of which is the JPMorgan Chase Tower. It is the tallest skyscraper in the state and has an observation deck at the top. In fact, its uniqueness lies at its base. An underground tunnel system connects it to other parts of the city. Pedestrians can move from one part of the city to another without suffering from the summer heat.

Houston is also known for the Mardi Gras-style carnival that used to celebrate the city and its businesses. The Notsuoh Festival - where the city is pronounced backwards - always began with a parade celebrating the coronation of a prominent businessman such as King Nottoc or King Retaw. The expert guide will tell you the history of this local tradition.

Sesquicentennial Park is located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, a former drinking water reservoir. It was created in 1986 to commemorate the city's 150th anniversary and is famous for the monument dedicated to George H.W. Bush and the seven pillars by artist George H.W. Bush. Bush and the seven pillars by artist Mel Chin. You'll stroll along the park's trails and scenic waterfalls.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the country and its downtown has a number of attractions. One of the main ones is Discovery Green, the city's green lung. It's a great place for rollerblading or canoeing on the lake.

One of the main streets, Houston Avenue, is home to some of Houston's best street art, while Houston's theatre district is home to some of Texas' best-known plays.

I found the tour a bit short. I enjoyed it very much and I learned a lot about Houston's history, but I would have loved it to be longer.
