The origins of flamenco are shrouded in mystery. What is certain is that it arose from a mixture of gypsy, Jewish and Arab songs and dances that lived on the fringes of society in Andalusia. One of the first mentions is by Cervantes, who described this musical genre in his work "La gitanilla". Since 2010, it has been considered Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Flamenco is deeply linked to the Andalusian land and is composed of three main elements: singing, dancing and guitar playing. Each style is called a palo and is distinguished by rhythm, meter or other elements. The main ones are as follows:

  • Fandango - The most widespread genre and probably the oldest. It is usually accompanied by guitar and castanets.
  • Soleá - Easily recognisable by two elements: the sad theme and the attire of the dancers who wear splendid lace costumes.
  • Bulería - A lively style, originally from Jerez de la Frontera. It is used to liven up parties and was originally not even considered a flamenco palo.
  • Sevillana - Originally from Castilla y León, it was soon adopted in Andalusia. It is characterised by its 4 coplas (composition of 4 verses) instead of 5. Today it is the most typical of the famous Feria de Abril.

Fantastic dancers and singers. There was a great atmosphere and you can tell that the dancers and guitarist love what they do.

This intimate venue is a must-see if you want authentic Spanish flamenco. I've seen flamenco in bigger cities and this is up to the task.
