This group tour is especially recommended for art lovers. It lasts just over an hour and has an expert guide who will explain the genesis of each work, the techniques used and the historical context.
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is located on Calle de Santa Isabel, very close to Atocha station and the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. It houses more than 20,000 paintings and sculptures and is undoubtedly one of the best museums in Spain. The cultural institution houses many emblematic works, among them:
- Guernica, Pablo Picasso. It is the work that has become the symbol of the horrors of war. The scene is inspired by a tragic episode of the Civil War, the bombing of the town of Guernica by the German air force.
- The House of the Palm Tree, Joan Miró. The painting depicts a country house and was painted in Mont-roig, near Tarragona. During this period, the artist abandoned the bright colours of Fauvism in favour of a more detailed style.
- Face of the Great Masturbator, Salvador Dalì. Probably the most autobiographical painting by the artist from Figueras, who had a peculiar relationship with his sexuality.
- A World, Ángeles Santos. A splendid example of surrealism and magical realism.
- Girl at the Window, Salvador Dalì. A simple but evocative painting that anticipates the Surrealist period. A girl with her back turned looks out of the window to contemplate the sea.
- Playing Cards and Dice, Georges Braque. Cubist work created shortly before the outbreak of the First World War.
- Woman in Blue, Pablo Picasso. Depicts a femme fatale inspired by Parisian women.
