Step by Step
The experience starts at the surf shop of your choice, where the instructor assesses your level, gives you a board, wetsuit and zinc sunscreen and reviews the safety rules. In a few minutes you'll be on the sand practising the take-off technique: posture, weight distribution and how to paddle efficiently.
Once in the water, each session is tailored to you. If you're a beginner, you'll work in shallow foam, learning how to control the nose of the board and keep your eyes straight ahead. Intermediate surfers move to the peak to polish trimming manoeuvres, smooth turns and take-off timing in green waves. The instructor accompanies each wave, corrects posture in real time and, with the help of clear gestures, ensures that you understand the set reading and priority.
Between sets, there are educational breaks on the shore to review how to identify rip currents, set up the fin and stretch the shoulders to prevent injury. At the end of the two hours, you'll review progress and receive dry training tips, recommended boards for your height and ideal beaches for further practice near Melbourne.
