More about: New York Ice Hockey NHL Games 2026-2027: Tickets and Best Prices
There are thousands of things to do in New York, and buying tickets for an NHL match is a highly recommended option. Ice hockey matches are renowned for their atmosphere. You’ll see the crowd buzzing as the puck whizzes across the ice. It’s an unforgettable experience that you can enjoy for much of the year.
Which NHL ice hockey matches can you watch in New York?
Ice hockey is an intense and entertaining sport: each match lasts 60 minutes and is divided into three periods. To ensure a fast pace, all five players are allowed to be substituted. This strategy is known as ‘line changes’. In New York, the main team is the New York Rangers, and the New York Islanders also play
New York Rangers
In the Big Apple, the New York Rangers are the team to beat. They are the only team representing the city in this competition. The club was founded in 1926 and is one of the six original teams that founded the NHL. They play their matches at the legendary Madison Square Garden. The arena is located in Midtown Manhattan between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.
The New York Rangers are part of the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division. Teams such as the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals also compete in this league. Some of these matches are fiercely contested. The season generally begins in October and the play-offs take place in April.
Where can I buy tickets to watch the NHL in New York?
NHL tickets can be easily purchased online. The tickets are digital and do not need to be printed; simply scan the code on your ticket to gain entry to the stadium. You can also buy them at the box office, although I wouldn’t recommend it – this way you’ll avoid wasting precious time during your stay in the city.
It’s generally best to buy your tickets a few days in advance. Check the NHL fixture list – if the New York Rangers are playing their big rivals, tickets sell out in a flash. The most heated rivalries are with the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders (two derbies), the Philadelphia Flyers, the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins.
How much does it cost to watch an NHL match in New York?
It depends on the seat and the match . Usually, the cheapest ticket ranges from $20 to $30 (roughly between €18 and €27), whilst the most expensive – and with the best view, of course – can exceed $300. If you have a larger budget, you can opt for the Event Level, Lexus Level, Signature Level, Lounge and Garden Lounge suites.
Bear in mind that American teams use dynamic pricing. Let me explain: the price of each ticket varies depending on various factors such as market demand and seasonality. Furthermore, prices rise when the Rangers face their arch-rivals:
- the New Jersey Devils – practically a derby. Each match is known as ‘The Battle of the Hudson River’
- Philadelphia Flyers
- New York Islanders. Despite their name, they do not play in New York City but in Edmont, a suburb of Hempstead, a town in Nassau County
- Pittsburgh Penguins – a sporting rivalry that has endured since the 1990s
- Boston Bruins. In the United States, Boston and the Big Apple have always been rivals
How can you save money on NHL tickets in New York?
The best way to save money on ice hockey is to buy your tickets in advance. Watching the New York Rangers live at the incredible Madison Square Garden comes at a price. However, there are other ways you can save when buying your tickets.
Choose a less high-profile opponent
When checking tickets for a New York Rangers match, you should look not only at the date the match is played, but also at the team they’re playing against. If you choose one of their big rivals, prices may be higher and, in fact, the cheapest seats sell out quickly due to the interest generated among the thousands of American fans drawn to the sport.
However, if, as well as booking your tickets well in advance – and if your stay in New York allows it – you try to choose a less high-profile opponent, ticket prices will be lower and you’ll have a better chance of finding cheap tickets.
Tickets for pre-season matches will also be more affordable. Before the league season starts, you can catch some cracking games, including derbies! There are also university team matches which attract less interest but let you enjoy the fantastic atmosphere of a hockey match without spending a fortune.
The best seats at Madison Square Garden
As is the case in large stadiums for mass-participation sports, some seats offer better views than others. If you fancy the experience of watching the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden for the spectacle they put on, but without needing to follow the puck across the ice all the time, I’d recommend choosing a seat in the 200 section – specifically sections 208, 210, 222 or 225. These are the blocks offering the best value for money.
There are also other sections, such as those numbered 413 to 420, where the view is not as good but the prices are much more affordable, although it will be harder to follow the game.
How much do New York Rangers tickets cost?
Firstly, bear in mind that New York Rangers matches are almost always sold out. To secure your seat, it’s highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance.
As a general rule, tickets for the New York team have an average price of $145, which is roughly equivalent to €133. Prices rise significantly during the play-offs. If the New York Rangers qualify, the cheapest ticket can easily reach $350 (around €321).
Can I visit Madison Square Garden if I’m not going to a match?
Yes, you can visit Madison Square Garden even if you’re not going to a match. The venue offers guided tours that allow you to explore the inside of one of New York’s most legendary arenas, home to the New York Rangers and the New York Knicks, one of the NBA’s most iconic teams.
As well as its sporting significance, the Garden is also one of the city’s great entertainment venues, hosting concerts and shows all year round, so it remains a highly recommended visit even when there’s no event on that day.
When to watch an NHL match in New York?
The regular season runs from early October to early April. However, there is a pre-season that you can enjoy throughout September. In total, NHL teams play 82 matches during the regular season. The top three teams from each division (Central, Pacific, Atlantic and Metropolitan) and two wild-card teams per conference qualify for the play-offs. The winner lifts the Stanley Cup, the oldest trophy in American professional sport.
To give you an idea, the most common dates for NHL fixtures are usually between October and June: the regular season usually kicks off in October, the play-offs begin in April and the Stanley Cup Final takes place between late May and June. For example, in the 2025–26 season, the regular season began on 7 October 2025 and the final kicked off on 2 June 2026.
How long does an NHL match last?
If you love this sport but don’t know everything about it, this guide will be very useful. Ice hockey matches are played with six players on the ice, although teams usually have 20 or more players. It’s a fast-paced sport and each player only plays for a minute or so. As a result, substitutions are very frequent. ‘Fights’ are allowed (a red card results in a 5-minute penalty) and this adds to the adrenaline of the matches.
A match lasts 60 minutes and is divided into three 20-minute periods. Each break lasts 15 minutes. Bear in mind that the clock stops during each interruption and substitutions are made during this interval. For this reason, the game usually lasts around two and a half hours. If, at the end of the 60 minutes, the score is tied, there is a 5-minute period of extra time. The ‘golden goal’ decides the match.
Do children have to pay for admission to NHL matches?
It depends on their age. As a general rule, NHL teams allow children under the age of 2 to attend the match for free. Bear in mind that the child will have to sit on your lap as they won’t have a dedicated seat. If you think your little one might feel uncomfortable, I’d recommend buying a ticket anyway.
Another thing to bear in mind is the temperature. As it’s an ice sport, the stadiums tend to be quite cold. Make sure they’re wrapped up warm before you leave the hotel! Here’s more info on things to do in New York with children.
