The Palace of the Popes is one of those places that makes an impression even before you step inside. Its massive walls rise above Avignon as a reminder of a time when the city became one of Europe’s great religious and political centres.

Built from the 14th century onwards, the complex became the residence of nine popes and welcomed monarchs, nobles and figures of immense influence. Its sheer scale helps to illustrate the extent to which this place was conceived not only as a residence, but also as a symbol of authority.

During your visit, you’ll be able to explore 25 rooms. The Great Audience Hall and the Consistory showcase the palace’s more institutional side, whilst the Great Clementine Chapel serves as a reminder of the ceremonial and religious significance the building held for centuries.

You’ll also be able to take a peek into the popes’ former private apartments, where the décor takes on a much more intimate character. Their walls and ceilings feature preserved frescoes attributed to artists such as Matteo Giovanetti and Simone Martini, which allow you to imagine the luxury and sophistication of the papal court.
