Step by Step
The experience starts at the meeting point next to the official ticket office. There your accredited guide hands out audio systems (for groups of more than eight people) and, after validating your tickets, welcomes you with a brief historical overview of Augusta Emerita, the capital of the province of Lusitania, now one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in the world.
In the Gran Plaza you stop in front of the imposing Pyramid of Kukulkan (El Castillo), a stone calendar with 365 steps that, during the equinoxes, projects the famous serpent of light. The guide details the alignment of the temples with the solstices and zenith, as well as the acoustics that return a quetzal echo as you clap your hands in front of the north staircase.
The tour continues at the Ball Court, the largest in Mesoamerica, whose walls show reliefs of players and ritual decapitation. Here you will see the amazing propagation of sound: a clap next to a captain can be heard clearly at the other end of the field.
After that, you move on to the Temple of the Warriors and the Group of a Thousand Columns, a forest of pillars that supported a large market or ceremonial hall. Amidst legends of jaguars and eagles devouring hearts, your guide reveals the military symbolism that decorated the reliefs.
The guided tour ends next to the path of the Sacred Cenote, where the religious function and the archaeological finds -jade jewellery, gold and human remains- recovered from the bottom are explained. After that, you have free time to return to your favourite spots, buy obsidian souvenirs or recharge your batteries with coconut water in the service area.
