Montserrat Monastery Day Trip from Barcelona

Just an hour from Barcelona, the rounded and almost surreal shapes of the Montserrat mountain herald one of Catalonia’s most special places. You’ll set off from the city centre in a small group and travel by coach to the foot of the mountain before beginning the ascent to the monastery.

The journey itself is part of the experience. As the coach gains altitude, the landscape opens up and Montserrat’s distinctive rocky spires come into view all around, until you reach the Abbey of Santa María de Montserrat, situated right at the heart of the massif.

There, you’ll take a guided tour lasting approximately one hour to learn about the history of the monastery, founded in the 11th century, and to understand its cultural and religious significance. Admission is included, and you’ll also have priority access to make the most of your time on the excursion.

Next comes one of the highlights of this experience: around two and a half hours of free time. You can use this time to explore the surrounding area, follow one of the footpaths and seek out new views of the mountain, visit the Montserrat Museum — featuring works by artists such as Dalí and Caravaggio — or take one of the funiculars to reach higher ground.

You’ll also have the chance to visit La Moreneta, the famous Black Madonna of Montserrat, or attend a performance by the Escolanía choir, subject to availability and provided the necessary booking has been made. After your free time, you’ll return to Barcelona by coach.
