A little historical context

According to historical records, Italica was the birthplace of at least three Roman emperors: Trajan, Hadrian and, quite possibly, Theodosius. It is considered one of the first Roman settlements in what is now Spain; it is estimated that the city was founded around 200 BC.

During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and during the reign of Trajan, this important Roman enclave achieved high social and military status, thanks to the efforts of its ruler and his successor Hadrian. During this period, the city reached a population that exceeded 8,000 inhabitants.

On a trip to visit the ruins of this important city, you can see one of the largest amphitheatres in the Roman Empire, with a capacity for 25,000 spectators. The amphitheatre has been wonderfully preserved over the years. You can also see the remains of the temple of Emperor Trajan, the ancient Roman baths and a series of beautifully preserved mosaics. In 2016, part of the seventh season of the famous series Game of Thrones was filmed in Italica.
