Step by Step
Start the journey along the Bilbao estuary, leaving the industrial centres of Barakaldo, Sestao and Portugalete to the right, and head north towards Getxo. There, you will make a brief stop next to the emblematic Bizkaia Bridge, a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering.
You will continue on to Butrón Castle, a 45-metre-high stone fairytale with crenellated towers, before heading to the imposing viewpoint of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. From this balcony overlooking the Bay of Biscay you will be able to contemplate the small hermitage isolated in the rock and understand why it is so magical.
The route continues along the coast to Bermeo, with its fishing tradition and colourful fishermen's houses, and on to Mundaka, the jewel of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where you can capture the best views of its marshes and cliffs.
You will finish in Gernika, the cradle of Basque history, stopping at the Casa de Juntas and under the legendary Tree of Gernika, a symbol of freedom. On the return route, you will travel through the interior of Bizkaia, enjoying the rural landscapes until you reach Bilbao again.
