Step by Step
This 4x4 tour through the Madeira Mountains is a fantastic way to discover the eastern part of the island from a more adventurous perspective. On board a jeep, the tour takes in less travelled roads and landscapes that combine sea, forest and mountains, creating a very complete day for those who want to get to know a more authentic Madeira.
The first stop of note is Machico, the bay where the Portuguese landed in 1419/20. From there, the route continues along ancient royal roads and rural paths where the most ancient agricultural terraces of the island and the stretches that cross the indigenous forest catch the eye. It is a route rich in scenery and local history.
Further on, the excursion reaches Porto da Cruz, a picturesque coastal village where the mountains meet the Atlantic. One of the most interesting moments of the day is the stop at the rum distillery, where you can discover more about the tradition linked to this drink so representative of the island.
The itinerary continues to Santana, famous for its traditional thatched houses, one of the most famous symbols of Madeira. The route then culminates at Pico do Arieiro, one of the highest peaks on the island, from where some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Madeira's mountainous landscape can be enjoyed.
All in all, this is a highly recommended excursion for those who want to combine culture, nature and adventure in a single day. The possibility to take the tour with a multilingual guide and to choose the option with or without lunch makes the experience even more flexible.
