Step by Step

Delve into the heart of Portugal with this nine-hour tour of some of the country’s most notable sights. From the comfort of an air-conditioned minivan that will collect you and your group in Lisbon, visit the villages of Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos, located approximately 90 minutes from the capital.

In Fátima, you’ll be able to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima. There, over a century ago, the Virgin Mary appeared to Lúcia, Jacinta and Francisco, three local shepherd children. Today, on that very spot stands one of the Catholic shrines that attracts the most visitors each year.

In Nazaré, you’ll discover the charm of this fishing village, with a wide variety of restaurants and cafés. It boasts one of Portugal’s most spectacular beaches, and one of the most popular with locals. There, you can enjoy stunning views of the sea, thanks to its cliffs.

You can also visit the Monastery of Batalha, a religious building constructed in the 14th century and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll be able to enjoy a rich artistic heritage dating from the late 14th century. You’ll also have access to the royal tomb in the Founder’s Chapel of the basilica, where King John I, Queen Philippa of Lancaster and their son, Prince Henry the Navigator, were buried.

The town of Óbidos will transport you back to medieval times. It is commonly known in Portugal as ‘the wedding gift town’, as it was a gift from King Dinis to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282. You can explore the medieval fortress, its colourful houses and its Gothic arches and windows, decorated with vases and dazzling tiles, and sample ginja liqueur – one of the country’s official drinks, made from cherries – in one of its many wine bars.

I took this tour as a gift for my grandmother. I knew she would like it but she was fascinated by everything we saw. We will definitely be back and this time accompanied by more family members.

The Batalha Monastery is amazing, I can see why it was declared a World Heritage Site. It has a history and architecture that you can't miss.
