Step by Step

The bus departs from Kyoto and heads first to Nara, the former imperial capital where sika deer roam freely. As you alight around Tōdaiji Temple, you'll see the mighty Great Buddha Hall, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, appear through the trees and have time to feed the deer or buy a good luck charm.

The route continues to Osaka. The vehicle will drop you off next to the lights of Dotonbori, the city's most vibrant neighbourhood. You can have your photo taken with the Glico Man, try a bite of takoyaki and feel the unmistakable energy of "Japan's cuisine". A few minutes away by bus awaits the next stop: Osaka Castle. You won't enter the keep, but walking through its outer gardens - surrounded by moats and cyclopean walls - gives you a sense of the scale of the fortress.

From Osaka you head out to sea and arrive in Kobe, famous for its international mix. The bus stops in Chinatown (Nankinmachi), a patchwork of red lanterns, steaming dumplings and spice shops where you can have lunch on your own. Afterwards, a short transfer takes you to Kobe Harbor, a waterfront promenade dotted with modern sculptures and the iconic harbour tower. With the salt air in your face and Mount Rokko as a backdrop, you'll see why Kobe boasts a quality of life.

Finally, the bus returns to Kyoto across the bridges that stitch Osaka Bay together. You'll arrive in the evening, just in time to lose yourself in the alleyways of Ponto-chō or rest in your hotel after a day of the best of Kansai: temples, neon lights and coastline.
