Step by Step
The Hozu River cruise is a centuries-old tradition that blends history and nature. The rowing boats, propelled by bamboo poles and rowing oars, sail through an almost untouched gorge where water-carved rocks and extreme vegetation create a spectacular backdrop.
In spring, bright green maples and cherry trees invite you to contemplate the rebirth of life; in summer, the water breeze cools the intense heat; in autumn, the canyon is ablaze with reddish hues; and in winter, the atmosphere becomes silent and contemplative, only broken by the splashing of the boat.
The route covers about 16km and takes between 90 and 120 minutes, varying according to the water level. You will depart from Kameoka and arrive at the historic Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, where you can combine the ride with the scenic Sagano Scenic Railway.
This cruise connects you to the life of Edo-era boatmen, who transported logs and grain for centuries, and offers a relaxing getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
