Step by Step
Delve into some of the most decisive episodes in British history with a tour dedicated to the figure of Winston Churchill. From London, you’ll travel accompanied by a professional guide whilst discovering the historical context of the two sites included in the tour.
The first part of the experience will take you to Churchill’s War Rooms, the underground complex that served as the British Government’s secret headquarters during the Second World War. Its corridors and rooms have been preserved almost exactly as they were in 1945, allowing you to see the staff’s bedrooms, the kitchen and Churchill’s private office.
You’ll also be able to explore the Cabinet Room, where Churchill and his ministers made crucial decisions, and the Map Room, whose documents, notes and markings show how the troops’ progress was tracked. The visit is self-guided within the complex and includes an audio guide.
You’ll then travel to Blenheim Palace, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Marlborough and the birthplace of Winston Churchill. There, you’ll explore its historic state rooms, learn about daily life at the palace and visit the permanent exhibition dedicated to the former Prime Minister’s personal and political career.
The visit concludes with time to stroll through the gardens and the extensive landscaped park surrounding the palace. Afterwards, you’ll return to London and the tour will end near Gloucester Road Underground station, from where you can easily continue on to other parts of the city.
Reviews
- GG.An intense but well-balanced excursion combining history, architecture and a walk in the fresh air. We returned to London tired, though very satisfied.
- SS.Seeing the map room practically as it was at the end of the war was fascinating. It’s a visit that conveys so much more than a book ever could.
- MM.The day was well organised, although the fact that it ended in Kensington rather than at the same starting point took us a bit by surprise. The underground station was very close by.
- JJ.I went with my father, who is a history buff, and he enjoyed every minute of it. I knew less about it, but I was also able to follow everything without any difficulty.
Meeting point
